Microsoft Terminal Server Licensing and Transition Plan Licensing Brief on How-To redeem TS Transition CALs
TS Transition CALs FAQs
Microsoft is extending the TS CAL Transition plan from December 31, 2005
to June 30, 2007. The TS CAL Transition plan was introduced with
Microsoft(r) Windows Server(tm) 2003 to ease the migration of existing
customers from Windows 2000 Server Terminal Services to Windows Server
2003 Terminal Services. Please read below for complete background on the
transition plan.
Background on the TS CAL Transition Plan: The principle of License
Equivalency for Windows 2000 Server Terminal Services meant that if the
customer had a workstation based on the Windows 2000 Professional
Operating System (OS) or later version (i.e. Windows XP Professional)
then the Windows 2000 / XP client device could connect to Windows 2000
Terminal Services without an additional license as the OS license was
considered equivalent to a Terminal Services CAL. This licensing model
was inconsistent with all other Microsoft Server-CAL products and often
resulted in customer confusion because the purchase of the CAL depended
on the client operating system version. Customers with mixed
environments of multiple Windows client OS versions found it difficult
to track, plan and purchase the appropriate number of CALs.
Based on feedback and the importance of consistency to our customers,
Microsoft made the decision to require a TS CAL for ANY device
connecting to Windows Server 2003 based Terminal Services. This change
meant that customers who previously used equivalency for previous
versions of Terminal Services now need to buy CALs for every device. To
help customers to make this transition Microsoft introduced Terminal
Services Transition CALs. Transition CALs are available for any
customer in the following scenario:
* The customer licensed Windows XP Professional or the right to
install Windows XP Professional (via EA, SA, upgrade protection, etc)
before April 24, 2003. Customers may redeem one (1) TS Transition CAL
for each eligible desktop.
The TS CALs that customers receive are perpetual Windows 2003 TS CALs.
Customers with an Enterprise Agreement or Software Assurance coverage on
the eligible desktops as of April 24, 2003 will also receive Software
Assurance for the TS Transition CAL for the lifetime of that agreement
or coverage.
Previously customers had until December 31, 2005 to redeem for their TS
Transition CALs. This deadline is being extended until June 30, 2007 to
give customers who are eligible for TS Transitions CALs additional time
to redeem CALs they are eligible for. Note: the April 24, 2003
eligibility date has NOT changed.
FAQ's
Q. What's changing?
A. Only the date for redeeming TS transition CAL's is changing. The
April 24, 2003 eligibility date has not changed.
Q. Why is Microsoft doing this?
A. Microsoft wants to provide more time to customers who were eligible
for TS Transition CALs on April 24, 2003 but who have not yet taken the
advantage of the TS Transition CAL. As such the extension of the
Transition Plan ensures that customers who have always been eligible
will continue to be eligible.
Q. Does this give customers the rights to CALs for future versions of Terminal Services?
A. No, the transition plan gives customers perpetual Windows Server 2003
TS Transition CALs that can be used for connecting to Windows Server
2003 and Windows Server 2003 R2 or earlier versions of Windows Server
Terminal Services (i.e. Windows 2000 Server Terminal Services).
